What is the difference between a Local Accommodation and a Hotel?

Local accommodations are accommodation units smaller than hotels, with fewer rooms available and usually managed by local people, which offer greater proximity to their guests and a more quiet and informal environment. There are many types of local accommodation, depending on the particularities they offer their guests. At Smiling Places, for example, all rooms have private bathrooms, as is the case in hotels, but it is not a rule in all accommodations in Portugal. It is advisable to confirm what is included and if it matches what you are looking for before making a reservation.

Is a Local Accommodation the same as a Hostel?

Within the local accommodation there are several modalities: Villa / Apartment for total use, Lodging Establishments (where the Local Accommodations and Hostels) and Rooms (modality in which the owner resides in that place). The big difference between the Local Accommodation and the Hostel lies in the first case rooms are available and in the second case beds are available, in dormitories, sharing a room with other guests. Usually a Hostel practices lower prices than a local accommodation, because it has this concept of sharing. The choice between the two modalities depends on the purpose of the stay and the experience you want.

How do I know that a Local Accommodation is safe and reliable?

The Portuguese Law guarantees this protection, requiring the registration of all local accommodations, through the presentation of various requirements that promote the safety and comfort of its users. All accommodations must mention this registration number on the websites, social networks or in all disclosure they make, i.e. if this number is not available, be suspicious and ask if it is registered.
